Courier Fraud in Cheltenham

Police are investigating another courier fraud incident  in Cheltenham after an 85-year-old woman was conned out of £6,000.

Last week the victim received a call from a man claiming to be a police officer from Scotland Yard who said that her bank card had been cloned in London. He asked how much money she had in her account and told her to withdraw it and it would be collected from her as evidence.

To avoid suspicion when she went to withdraw the money from her account she told the bank clerk that it was to buy a new car and the cash was released to her.

Later in the day the money was collected by a woman who gave an agreed “password” and the victim was later contacted and told that the money had been put back into her account, which was not true.

The woman who collected the money is described as being tall, slim and black with long black hair tied back tightly. She was wearing a black Puffa type jacket, black leggings and boots and big, gold hooped ear-rings.

Officers investigating this incident would like to hear from anyone who saw the woman courier or anyone else behaving suspiciously in the Hales Road area of Cheltenham any day this week. Anyone with information is asked to call Gloucestershire Constabulary on 101 or email 101@gloucestershire.police.uk quoting incident 82 of 26 January.

They would also like to remind people that police and banks would not ask for bank details over the phone not ask anyone to withdraw sums of money.

If anyone gets such a call they should hang up and contact police on 101, or Action Fraud on 0300 1232040, using a different phone as the criminals my still be on the open line.

Please circulate the attached information sheet to raise awareness of the problem and how to prevent becoming a victim.
